Dominican Republic October 2016

Dr. Yee joined a team of healthcare workers with Global Health Outreach (GHO) and traveled to the Dominican Republic to provide medical and dental care to prison inmates.

At the same time we were there, Hurricane Matthew roared through the island and drenched many parts of the country. We were not able to make planned visits to some of the prisons because they were flooded. Our schedule was changed but we still managed to see patients everyday. We endured through the stormy weather and we welcomed the clear days after the hurricane.

Despite the long hours and hot humid conditions, we got a lot of satisfaction and sense of accomplishment in providing needed healthcare to this oft-neglected population.

We spent a week in the prisons and saw the cramped cells and impoverished living conditions. We gained a greater appreciation for the freedoms that we enjoy.
