Dr. Yee and his weekend receptionist Sandy joined a Global Health Outreach (GHO) team of over 30 other healthcare workers to provide needed medical and dental care to a town in Nicaragua called Providencia. We were fortunate that our location was spared by Tropical Storm turned Hurricane Nate which drenched the landscape with two weeks of constant rain prior to our arrival.
Dr. Yee and Sandy treated many patients with needed fillings and extractions. Despite the extreme temperature, high humidity, and challenging work conditions, their experience was memorable and rewarding.
During the week, the team also performed medical exams, dispensed medications, fitted reading glasses, and gave community health presentations.
Some members of the medical team hiked through rocky paths to reach homes of those who were unable to make the trip to the clinic.
Sandy volunteered part of her time to care for the kids who craved her attention and love.
